Non-Windows Database of Suttas

Suitable for MAC, UNIX, Linux, etc.
(Windows users click here)

The Sutta Pitaka, the second division of the Tipitaka, consists of over 10,000 suttas, or discourses, delivered by the Buddha and his close disciples during the Buddha's forty-five year teaching career, as well as many additional verses by other members of the Sangha.

I have created a database of over 800 sutta translations from material on the Access to Insight website. The HTML files were converted from HTML to RTF format using the free Ishtar32_14.exe converter program. The RTF files were read into The Unicode Document Processor using File - Append to create a database which was then exported to a comma-delimited text format.

In order to access this database in a non-Windows environment, you need to download the text database and then import the text file into the database program of your choice. You have two choices of format to download the text database:

After it is downloaded and uncompressed, you will then need to import the text file into the database of your choice. The file is a comma-delimited text file (aka a Comma Separated Values (CSV) text file) - do what is necessary to import a file of this type into your chosen database. Please note that I am totally unable to help you with this task since I only do Windows.

Then all you need to do is save the resulting database in its native format. You will have a database of suttas that can be searched using whatever capabilities your database program has. See the second record for tips on how to use this database.

Many thanks to Phil Jones for suggesting this CSV text approach for non-Windows systems.

is known to have been successfully imported:

If you successfully import sutta.txt into any other program, please email me at with the info so I can add to this list.
