History of Mayfield Cemetery

Mayfield Cemetery is located at 412 Wilson Pike, Brentwood, Tennessee. This historic cemetery is steeped in Brentwood history. Sutherland Mayfield and family are thought to be the first white settlers in the area of Brentwood and built Mayfield Station. Sutherland Mayfield was killed by Creek Indians in 1789 near the fort and his son George was taken hostage. George escaped after 12 years of captivity and eventually returned to Brentwood where he built a cabin on Wilson Pike. George died while on a trip to Mississippi, but his wife is believed to be buried in this cemetery as well as several of his children and their descendants. The earliest remaining stone is dated 1832 with the youngest dated 1879. There are at least 13 unmarked graves.

Those buried in the cemetery are: Elizabeth Ann Mayfield, Dr. Sutherlin Shannon Mayfield, Sarah Waller Mayfield, Sutherland Shannon Mayfield Jr., Nancy Ann Mayfield, John Henry Mayfield, Eliza Herbert Mayfield, Sutherlin Shannon Mayfield, Martha McAlpin, Susan Viola Zachary and Dr. Daniel Carmack. The people who are probably buried in the cemetery, but no head stone found are: Elizabeth Ann McAlpin, Peter P. Mayfield, Robert Cassety Mayfield, William Maxwell Mayfield and Sarah "Sallie" Mayfield. The Mayfield family was the first non-indiginous family in Brentwood. Their Mayfield Station is located on Old Smyrna Rd. in Brentwood TN
